From 20 to 23 December the SEAL team organized a third workshop on student centered methodologies in science teaching, targeting science teachers from the 4 practice schools of the Regional Teacher Training College in Kandal. The first day participants discussed a number of lesson plans and try-outs applying various student centered approaches. These discussions will help them integrating student centered methodologies in a meaningful way in their own lessons. The second day concept cartoons were introduced as a tool to stimulate student involvement, to identify misconceptions and to improve conceptual understanding. Teacher trainers, who were trained by lecturers from Arteveldehogeschool Ghent, trained in their turn the model teachers from the practice schools and experts from the Ministry of Education. A wide selection of 78 cartoons was redrawn by a local artist. During the first quarter of 2011 the introduction of cartoons will be monitored through a series of lesson observations, video recording and feedback sessions. In 2011 the cartoons will be submitted for approval by the Ministry of Education and distributed to all teacher training colleges.
