In May 2015, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MOEYS) and VVOB have jointly organised a study visit to the provincial teacher training college in Takeo, Cambodia. The overall aim was for the teacher trainers of three rural provinces to learn about lesson study.

Study visit

The mathematics and science teacher trainers of Kratie, Stung Treng and Preah Vihear got the opportunity to visit the provincial teacher training college (PTTC) of Takeo. In this PTTC, the teacher trainers have built up a strong expertise in lesson study through the support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Hiroshima University.

What is lesson study?
Lesson study is a teaching improvement process. Through joint work, teachers improve their lessons. It consists of four phases:
(1) Assess and set goals;
(2) Plan and design lessons;
(3) Improve and observe; and
(4) Review and refine.

Outcomes

The participants of the study visit not only received a refresher training on lesson study, but also had the opportunity to discuss on their issues with heads of technical groups and to participate in lesson observations and post-discussions. This way they gathered ideas on planning, organizing, monitoring and evaluating lesson study.

Future plans

In the coming months, the management and teacher trainers of the PTTCs in the three rural provinces will be developing a calendar to plan lesson study rounds and will start putting their new knowledge in practice.
